#CoolShit 03.10.20
COVID-19, Jupiter, John Coltrane, LeBron, the realness of working from home, banks don’t want your mortgage - there’s a lot today...
Well it looks like its one of THOSE mornings this morning.
First I’m going to hit you with some generally cool stories that popped up in regulars to the dreaded CORONAVIRUS. I haven’t shared much about it because A) there’s nothing really cool about a mysterious disease that is scaring the shit out of the entire world and B) there’s nothing really cool about a mysterious disease that is scaring the shit out of the entire world.
But then we move back into the normal shit - and boy did I find a lot this morning.
I just couldn’t stop coming across interesting things that I wanted you to see.
So without any further ado, enjoy!

Tech giants will keep paying hourly staff even if they are asked to stay home due to coronavirus

Amazon, Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Twitter have all pledged to pay hourly workers their regular rate even if those staffers are asked to remain at home due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak

Payments on mortgages to be suspended across Italy after coronavirus outbreak
ROME, March 10 (Reuters) - Payments on mortgages will be suspended across the whole of Italy after the coronavirus outbreak, Italy’s deputy economy minister said on Tuesday.
To be honest, I don’t think the U.S. would EVER EVER do this.
This play-by-play twitter thread of someone who has CORONAVIRUS.

Just in case…

I really liked the sentiment of this tweet. Whether this whole thing is a legit reason to panic, or just hysterics - it’s better to be over prepared than the opposite.
Wash your hands!
Okay, enough with COVID-19, back to the regularly scheduled weird shit that I share, like…
Saturn's largest moon might be the only place beyond Earth where humans could live

This is a super nerdy exploration as to how we could hypothetically live on one of Jupiters moon.
What do you think? Do you think, in your life time, we’ll see humans inhabit somewhere other than earth?
Our colonization scenario, based on science, technology, politics and culture, presents a thought experiment for anyone who wants to think about the species’ distant future.
Up to now, most researchers have looked at the Moon or Mars as the next step for human habitation. These destinations have the dual advantages of proximity and of not being clearly unrealistic as choices for where we should go. That second characteristic is lacking at the other bodies near us in the inner solar system, Mercury and Venus.
There is no quick way to move off the Earth. We will have to solve our problems here. But if our species continues to invest in the pure science of space exploration and the stretch technology needed to preserve human health in space, people will eventually live on Titan.

How to find your most creative time of day, and make it count

First off, yes, there is a time of day when you are most creative, but it’s different for different people.
We need to step back and look at what creativity really is, in the brain. From an electrical perspective, it’s when you have different neural networks that engage with one another in unique ways that did not engage before. When two different ideas collide together in the brain, it gives birth to a third idea. That collision happening in the brain can be encouraged by exposing yourself to different environments or stimuli or data.
For many people, that time is usually when they're not at their most energetic, or most productive. You don't want to schedule creative time during your most productive time; you want to schedule it when you're slightly less goal-oriented and sharp, when you’re on the downward slope and you’ve started to fatigue, so that you're open to different ways of thinking and creating.
There is too much to quote here, just go read the whole damn thing.
Africa is BIG

I knew Africa was big but HOLY HELL.
This bootleg recording of a “private jam” with John Coltrane
I listened to this for 15 seconds and immediately dug it. The quality is shitty, you can hear the band chattering with each other, but it also transports you into a room with some of the greatest musical talent ever.
The session, recorded September 25, 1958, took place in the basement of Joe Brazil, a Detroit-based saxophonist who appeared on Coltrane’s album Om (and Ubiquity by Roy Ayers). Brazil’s house had a bar and baby grand piano in the basement. Major jazz figures coming through town would often swing by for jam sessions in this basement alongside local players.

The natural light, the exposed raw materials, the openness - it is impossible for me to like this any more than I already do.
Rare Andy Warhol drag queen portraits go on show in Tate Modern exhibition

Near-forgotten series of striking portraits are part of a 100-strong show of works opening at the London museum this week
The African-American and Latinx transgender women and drag queens painted by Andy Warhol in 1975 for his Ladies and Gentlemen series remained nameless for more than 40 years. But researchers at the New York-based Andy Warhol Foundation have put names to the faces, which were first displayed anonymously at the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara in 1975.
