The City That Remade Its Police Department
With all the talk of “defund the police”, here is a really good read on how Camden, NJ rebuilt it’s police department from the ground up.
The transformation began after the 2012 homicide spike. The department wanted to put more officers on patrol but couldn’t afford to hire more, partly because of generous union contracts. So in 2013, the mayor and city council dissolved the local PD and signed an agreement for the county to provide shared services.
It’s not perfect, but it’s a lot better.

Calida Garcia Rawles incredible paintings of black bodies in floating in water
“I found that I felt emotionally lighter after leaving the pool, no matter what issues I was working out before I jumped into the water. This led me to begin using water as a visual language… a way to heal and address difficult and divisive issues.”
“Nevermind” ~WHO
Yesterday there was a big story about how WHO believed that asymptomatic folks were very unlikely to be contagious.
Today, they are clarifying:
It was not the “intent of WHO to say there is a new or different policy,” added Mike Ryan, head of emergency programs for WHO. “There is still too much unknown about this virus and still too much unknown about its transmission dynamics.”
Gotta be careful who you say today, we’re DESPERATE to get back to life.
