What is Juneteenth?
In short, President Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that the enslaved we’re now free. Unfortunately, the slave owners didn’t pass this information along to their slaves. Juneteenth celebrates the day, June 19th 1865, the slaves realized, via a trip from a Union general, that they were free - 2.5 years after Lincolns declaration.
